The TPS92692QPWPRQ1 is a high-accuracy peak current-mode LED controller from Texas Instruments, qualified to AEC-Q100 Grade 1 for automotive applications. It supports boost and buck-boost LED driver topologies with a wide input voltage range of 4.5 V to 65 V, making it suitable for automotive battery-powered lighting systems. The device incorporates a rail-to-rail current sense amplifier for precise LED current measurement with better than +/-4% accuracy across the full junction temperature range of -40°C to 150°C. Spread spectrum frequency modulation reduces EMI, simplifying filter design. The controller offers dual dimming capability: analog dimming via the IADJ input with over 15:1 contrast ratio, and PWM dimming through the DIM/PWM pin with over 1000:1 range. An internal PWM generator converts a DC voltage at the DIM/PWM pin to a corresponding duty cycle, enabling standalone dimming without an external PWM source.

The TPS92692QPWPRQ1 operates through five key subsystems: (1) The oscillator and spread spectrum block generates the switching frequency (adjustable 80-800 kHz) with frequency dithering to spread EMI energy and reduce peak emissions. (2) The peak current-mode control loop uses a transconductance error amplifier and current sense comparator to regulate the LED current. The COMP pin allows external compensation for loop stability. (3) The dimming subsystem supports two modes: analog dimming via the IADJ pin which scales the current reference, and PWM dimming via the DIM/PWM pin which chops the LED current at the desired duty cycle. The internal PWM generator creates a PWM signal from a DC voltage. (4) The PDRV gate driver output controls an external P-channel series MOSFET for fast LED current on/off during PWM dimming, improving dimming linearity at low duty cycles. (5) The protection and monitoring block includes output overvoltage protection, output short-circuit protection with hiccup mode, thermal shutdown, and a current monitor (IMON) output with fault flag (FLT) indicator.
