The TPS7A1650DGNR is a Texas Instruments 60V, 100mA ultra-low quiescent current low-dropout regulator with a fixed 5V output in an 8-pin HVSSOP (DGN) package with PowerPAD. The 3V to 60V input voltage range supports multi-cell battery packs from power tools to automotive systems. The 5µA typical quiescent current is critical for extending battery life in always-on or sporadically-active systems such as smoke detectors, CO2 monitors, and battery-backed microcontrollers. The 1µA shutdown current further minimizes drain when the regulator is disabled. The 60mV dropout voltage at 20mA load enables regulation even when the input battery voltage sags near the output. The programmable power-good output with adjustable delay capacitor provides a reset signal for microcontroller power sequencing. The enable pin is compatible with standard CMOS logic levels. Internal current limiting and thermal shutdown protect the device under fault conditions. The regulator is stable with ceramic output capacitors as small as 2.2µF, minimizing solution size. Rated for the full -40°C to +125°C automotive temperature range.

The TPS7A16 uses a PMOS pass transistor in a classic LDO topology. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (via an internal resistor divider for the fixed 5V version) with an internal bandgap reference. The amplifier drives the PMOS gate to regulate the output. The ultra-low 5µA quiescent current is achieved by biasing the error amplifier and reference at very low currents while maintaining adequate bandwidth for regulation. The 60V maximum input voltage is supported by a high-voltage PMOS process with thick gate oxide. The power-good comparator monitors the output voltage and asserts the open-drain PG pin when the output is above the threshold, with an external capacitor on the PG delay pin setting the assertion delay. The enable pin controls an internal switch that shuts down all bias currents to the 1µA shutdown state. Current limiting is implemented by sensing the pass transistor current and reducing the gate drive when the limit is exceeded.
