The TPS78233DDCR is a member of Texas Instruments’ TPS782 family of ultra-low quiescent current LDO regulators. Designed specifically for battery-operated and always-on systems, this device delivers a fixed 3.3V output at up to 150mA while drawing only 1.3uA of quiescent current. The innovative internal circuit maintains excellent output voltage regulation even under zero-load conditions, addressing a common limitation of traditional PMOS LDOs. The integrated active pull-down rapidly discharges the output when the device is disabled, ensuring predictable power-down behavior. Housed in a thin SOT-23-5 package, the TPS78233DDCR is ideal for space-constrained portable applications.

The TPS78233DDCR uses a PMOS pass transistor to achieve low dropout voltage regulation. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (via an internal resistor divider set for 3.3V) with an internal bandgap reference, and adjusts the PMOS gate drive to maintain regulation. The ultra-low quiescent current is achieved through a specialized bias circuit that minimizes operating current while preserving loop stability. An innovative light-load circuit maintains loop gain at zero-load conditions, ensuring regulation without a minimum load requirement. The enable pin (EN) is active-high and compatible with standard CMOS logic. When disabled, an active pull-down circuit discharges the output capacitor to within 5% of VOUT. The device includes built-in over-current, over-temperature, and reverse polarity protection circuits.
