The TPS2557DRBR from Texas Instruments is a precision current-limited power-distribution switch designed for applications where accurate current limiting and heavy capacitive load driving are required. The device integrates a 22 mΩ N-channel MOSFET with an internal charge pump, gate driver, current-sense amplifier, and thermal protection in a compact 3 x 3 mm VSON package. The current-limit threshold is programmable from 500 mA to 5 A through a single external resistor on the ILIM pin, with ±6.5% accuracy at 4.5 A. The TPS2557DRBR uses an internal charge pump to drive the gate of the N-channel MOSFET above the source voltage, enabling the MOSFET to operate as a high-side switch. The current-sense amplifier monitors the load current and compares it to the programmed threshold set by the R_ILIM resistor. When the load current exceeds the limit, the device transitions from fully-enhanced switch mode to constant-current limiting mode by reducing the gate drive voltage, thereby operating the MOSFET in its linear region. This limits the output current while reducing the output voltage proportionally. If the overload persists and the junction temperature exceeds 135°C, thermal cycling protection activates, turning off the MOSFET until the junction cools by 20°C. The built-in soft start controls the output rise time to limit inrush current into capacitive loads. The fault flag (open-drain) asserts low during overcurrent, overtemperature, or undervoltage lockout conditions.
