The TPS72018DRVR is a dual-rail, low-dropout linear regulator from Texas Instruments that offers outstanding AC performance including high PSRR and excellent load and line transient response while consuming only 38μA of quiescent current. The device features a unique bias pin architecture where the VBIAS rail powers the internal control circuitry and can be connected to any supply equal to or greater than 1.4V above the output voltage, while the main power path through VIN can operate as low as VOUT + VDO. This dual-rail approach enables high efficiency in power-sensitive applications where VIN can be sourced from a preceding DC-DC converter output. The fixed 1.8V output version supports up to 350mA load current with only 110mV dropout, and includes built-in soft-start, overcurrent, and thermal protection.

The TPS72018DRVR operates using a dual-rail LDO architecture. (1) The main power path flows from VIN through a P-channel pass transistor to the OUT pin, with VIN capable of operating as low as 1.1V to maximize efficiency in battery-powered applications. (2) The bias rail (VBIAS) powers the internal control circuitry including the error amplifier and bandgap reference, requiring at least 1.4V above the output voltage. This separation allows the control loop to maintain regulation even when VIN is very close to VOUT. (3) The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage against the internal bandgap reference (1.8V set point), driving the pass transistor gate to maintain regulation. The integrated soft-start circuit limits inrush current to 100mA + ILOAD during startup, while overcurrent and thermal shutdown circuits provide fault protection.
