The TPS6209733RWKT from Texas Instruments is a 3A synchronous step-down converter with a fixed 3.3V output in an ultra-compact VQFN-6 (2x2mm) package. The device operates from 2.3V to 6V input, making it ideal for single-cell Li-Ion or USB-powered applications requiring a 3.3V rail. The DCS-Control (Direct Control with Seamless transition) topology provides fast transient response with seamless transition between PWM and power-save modes. The 2.5MHz switching frequency allows use of tiny chip inductors. In power-save mode, the quiescent current is only 17uA typical, preserving battery life. The device supports 100% duty cycle mode for lowest dropout operation when the input voltage approaches the output voltage. The fixed 3.3V output eliminates external feedback resistors, further reducing solution size.

The TPS6209733RWKT uses TI’s DCS-Control topology. (1) DCS-Control: A proprietary control scheme that combines voltage-mode control with a fast output voltage comparator. The comparator provides immediate response to output voltage deviations, while the voltage-mode loop maintains precise DC regulation. (2) PWM Mode: At load currents above the power-save threshold, the device operates in fixed-frequency PWM mode at 2.5MHz, providing low output ripple. (3) Power-Save Mode: At light loads, the device enters PFM (pulse-frequency modulation) mode where single switching pulses are delivered on demand, reducing the effective switching frequency and quiescent current to 17uA. (4) Seamless Transition: The DCS-Control architecture ensures smooth transition between PWM and PFM modes without output voltage dips or overshoots. (5) 100% Duty Cycle: When VIN approaches VOUT, the high-side MOSFET is held on continuously, eliminating switching losses and providing the lowest possible dropout voltage.
