The TPS61251DSGR from Texas Instruments is a 3.5MHz synchronous boost converter with a fixed 5.0V output in a WSON-8 package. The device is designed to generate a 5V rail from a single-cell Li-Ion or Li-Polymer battery (2.7V to 4.5V) for USB OTG, peripheral power, and white LED applications. The 3.5MHz switching frequency enables the use of chip-scale inductors and small ceramic capacitors, minimizing solution size. The 800mA switch current limit supports output currents up to approximately 400mA from a 3.3V input. Synchronous rectification eliminates the external Schottky diode and improves efficiency up to 93%. The true shutdown feature completely disconnects the input from the output when disabled, preventing battery drain through the inductor. An input discharge feature actively discharges the output capacitor when the device is disabled, ensuring a clean power-down sequence. Average input current limiting protects the battery from excessive discharge current. The device uses average current-mode control with internal compensation for stable operation across input voltage and load conditions.

The TPS61251DSGR uses a synchronous boost topology with average current-mode control. (1) Boost Converter: During the on-time, the high-side switch connects the inductor to ground, ramping up inductor current. During the off-time, the low-side synchronous switch connects the inductor to the output, transferring stored energy. The output voltage is higher than the input voltage. (2) Average Current-Mode Control: An inner current loop regulates the average inductor current, while an outer voltage loop regulates the output voltage. The current loop bandwidth is higher than the voltage loop, providing fast response to input voltage transients and ensuring stable operation. Internal compensation simplifies design. (3) Synchronous Rectification: The low-side MOSFET replaces the external Schottky diode, reducing conduction losses and improving efficiency. The body diode of the low-side MOSFET conducts during the dead-time between switches. (4) True Shutdown: When disabled, both switches are off and the input is disconnected from the output through the inductor. Only a small leakage current flows from input to output. (5) Input Discharge: An internal discharge resistor is connected across the output when the device is disabled, draining the output capacitor within a few milliseconds.
