The TPS60400DBVT from Texas Instruments is a charge pump voltage inverter that efficiently generates a negative output voltage from a positive input supply. Requiring only three small 1uF ceramic capacitors, it provides the simplest possible solution for generating a negative rail in battery-powered and portable systems. The PowerSave mode (specific to the TPS60400 variant within the TPS6040x family) reduces switching frequency at light loads, significantly improving efficiency when the output current demand is low. The integrated active Schottky diode eliminates the external diode typically needed for start-up into a load, further reducing component count and board space.

The TPS60400 uses a switched-capacitor charge pump to invert the input voltage. The circuit operates in two phases per switching cycle. During the charge phase, an internal flying capacitor (CFLY, external 1uF) is connected between VIN and GND, charging it to approximately VIN. During the transfer phase, CFLY is reconnected with its positive terminal to GND and negative terminal to the output, transferring charge to the output capacitor (COUT, external 1uF). This produces a negative voltage at the output, approximately -VIN plus the voltage drop across the switch resistance (approximately 12 Ohm typical). The TPS60400’s PowerSave mode monitors the output voltage and reduces the switching frequency when the output is lightly loaded, maintaining regulation while minimizing quiescent current. The input bypass capacitor (CIN, external 1uF) decouples the switching transients from the source supply.
