The TPS549D22RVFT is a Texas Instruments 40A 22V synchronous step-down converter with integrated power MOSFETs in a HotRod QFN package. The device targets high-current point-of-load (POL) applications in servers, data centers, and telecom equipment where 12V intermediate bus architecture is common. The 40A output capability with integrated MOSFETs eliminates external driver and FET selection, simplifying design and reducing solution size. The PMBus-compliant digital interface enables runtime monitoring and control of output voltage, switching frequency, current limit, and fault status via I2C. Multiple devices can be stacked for current sharing in multi-phase configurations, supporting 80A, 120A, or higher total current. The +/-0.5% reference accuracy over temperature provides tight voltage regulation for advanced processors and FPGAs. The switching frequency is programmable from 200kHz to 1MHz via PMBus or pinstrap, balancing efficiency and solution size. Comprehensive protection includes overcurrent, overvoltage, undervoltage, and thermal shutdown with PMBus fault reporting. The HotRod QFN package with flip-chip die attach minimizes parasitic inductance for clean switch-node waveforms. Packaged in HotRod QFN rated for -40C to +125C.

The TPS549D22 uses peak current-mode PWM control with integrated high-side and low-side NMOS power FETs. The current-mode control provides fast transient response and cycle-by-cycle peak current limiting. The integrated current sense uses the low-side MOSFET RDS(on) for lossless current sensing, with PMBus-readable current telemetry. The error amplifier compares the FB voltage (or internal DAC output for PMBus-programmed VOUT) with the 0.6V reference, adjusting the peak current command. The PMBus interface (SCL, SDA, SALERT) provides access to configuration registers, status registers, and real-time telemetry (VOUT, IOUT, temperature). Multiple devices share the COMP pin for parallel current-sharing operation, where the error amplifier output of the master device drives all slave COMP pins. The switching frequency is set by PMBus register or an external resistor on the FREQ pin. Adaptive zero-crossing detection prevents negative inductor current at light loads in diode-emulation mode. The boot-refresh circuit maintains the bootstrap capacitor charge during low-duty-cycle conditions.

HotRod QFN with key signals: VIN (power input), VOUT (power output), SW (switch node), BOOT (bootstrap), EN (enable), FB (feedback or VSET), SCL/SDA/SALERT (PMBus), FREQ (frequency set), COMP (current share), PG (power good), CSEL (config select). Refer to datasheet for complete pin map.
