The TPS544C25RVFT from Texas Instruments is a 30A synchronous step-down converter with integrated PMBus digital interface for monitoring, control, and configuration. The device operates from a 4.5V to 18V input and provides an adjustable output from 0.5V to 5.5V at up to 30A. The D-CAP3 control mode provides fast transient response without external compensation, using adaptive on-time modulation with emulated current ramp for stable operation with low-ESR output capacitors. The PMBus interface allows reading of input/output voltage, current, temperature, and fault status, as well as configuration of output voltage, switching frequency, and protection thresholds. Up to four TPS544C25 devices can be stacked for 4-phase, 120A output with automatic current sharing. The device supports output voltage tracking and sequencing for powering complex multi-rail systems. The VQFN-HR-28 package features an enhanced thermal pad for efficient heat dissipation.

The TPS544C25RVFT operates as a D-CAP3 synchronous buck converter with PMBus digital control. (1) D-CAP3 Control: The D-CAP3 (Direct Capacitor Access with emulated ramp) mode uses an emulated inductor current ramp to stabilize the control loop without external compensation components. The adaptive on-time modulation adjusts the on-time based on input/output voltage ratio to maintain approximately constant switching frequency. (2) PMBus Interface: The PMBus (Power Management Bus) is an I2C-based protocol that allows the host system to read telemetry data (VOUT, IOUT, temperature, faults) and write configuration data (VOUT setpoint, frequency, thresholds). All parameters can be stored in non-volatile memory. (3) Stacking: When multiple TPS544C25 devices share a COMP pin, they operate in interleaved multi-phase mode. The master device generates the PWM signals for all phases, and automatic current sharing balances the load current between phases. Phase interleaving reduces input/output ripple and improves thermal distribution. (4) Protection: Overcurrent protection uses cycle-by-cycle current limiting. Over-voltage and under-voltage monitors on VOUT provide fault detection. Over-temperature protection shuts down the converter at 150C junction temperature.
