The TPS54160ADGQ from Texas Instruments is a 60V input, 1.5A step-down DC-DC converter with integrated N-channel MOSFET switches in a compact 10-pin HVSSOP PowerPAD package. The device employs a fixed-frequency current-mode PWM control architecture with selectable switching frequency of 500kHz or 700kHz, allowing optimization of efficiency versus external component size. The wide 4.5V to 60V input range accommodates unregulated DC sources such as 12V, 24V, and 48V industrial buses. The adjustable output voltage range from 0.8V to 55V is set via an external resistor divider. An Eco-mode pulse-skipping feature maintains high efficiency at light loads by reducing the effective switching frequency. The precision enable input with programmable UVLO allows controlled startup sequencing, while the open-drain power-good output indicates output regulation status.

The TPS54160A employs a current-mode PWM buck topology with integrated high-side and low-side N-channel MOSFETs. The high-side switch connects VIN to the inductor during the on-time, storing energy in the inductor and charging the output capacitor. During the off-time, the low-side synchronous switch provides a path for inductor freewheeling current. The current-mode control loop monitors the inductor current through the high-side switch on a cycle-by-cycle basis. The error amplifier compares the feedback voltage (FB pin) with an internal 0.8V reference and adjusts the COMP node voltage, which sets the peak current threshold. In Eco-mode, the device skips switching pulses when the output voltage is above the set point, reducing switching losses at light load. Protection includes cycle-by-cycle current limit, undervoltage lockout, and thermal shutdown.
