The TPS54040DGQR from Texas Instruments is a 42V, 0.5A step-down DC/DC converter with an integrated 200mOhm high-side N-channel MOSFET in a compact MSOP-10 PowerPAD package. The device uses current-mode control providing simple external compensation and flexible component selection. The wide 3.5V to 42V input voltage range supports operation from 12V, 24V, and 48V nominal supply rails. The adjustable switching frequency (100kHz to 2.5MHz) allows optimization of efficiency versus component size. At light loads, the pulse-skip Eco-Mode reduces operating quiescent current to 116uA. In shutdown, supply current drops to just 1.3uA. An open-drain power good output indicates when the output voltage is within 93% to 107% of nominal.

The TPS54040DGQR is a current-mode step-down (buck) DC/DC converter. The inner current loop controls peak inductor current cycle-by-cycle, while the outer voltage loop adjusts the current setpoint for output regulation. Current-mode control provides input voltage feed-forward, simplified compensation, and cycle-by-cycle current limiting. The integrated 200mOhm N-channel MOSFET switches the input voltage to the inductor during on-time. A bootstrap circuit provides gate drive voltage above VIN. At light loads, Eco-Mode enters pulse-skip mode for improved efficiency. An external resistor on RT/CLK sets the switching frequency or accepts an external clock for synchronization. The SS/TR pin capacitor sets the output voltage ramp time during startup.
