The TPS40210DRCR is a wide-input voltage non-synchronous boost controller from Texas Instruments designed for boost, flyback, SEPIC, and LED driver applications. Operating from 4.5 V to 52 V input, it drives an external grounded-source N-channel MOSFET with an integrated low-side driver. Current mode control provides improved transient response and simplified loop compensation, while internal slope compensation ensures stability at high duty cycles. The device features programmable soft start, overcurrent protection with automatic retry, and a programmable oscillator frequency from 35 kHz to 1 MHz. The 700 mV reference voltage (TPS40210 vs 260 mV for TPS40211) suits high-side current sensing applications. The compact 10-pin VSON package minimizes board space in power designs.

The TPS40210 uses peak current-mode control to regulate the output voltage. An external current-sense resistor in the MOSFET source path provides switch current information to the internal PWM comparator. The error amplifier compares the divided output voltage against the 700 mV reference, generating a COMP signal that sets the peak current threshold. An internal oscillator sets the switching frequency, and the ramp signal provides slope compensation for stable operation above 50% duty cycle. The integrated gate driver directly drives an external N-channel MOSFET. Soft start is achieved by ramping the COMP voltage slowly at startup. Overcurrent protection is implemented by monitoring the current-sense voltage; when exceeded, the device enters an automatic retry cycle after a cool-down period.
