The TPS2561DRCR is a dual-channel power distribution switch from Texas Instruments designed for applications requiring precision current limiting. Each channel features an adjustable current limit from 250mA to 2.8A (set via external resistor) with ±7.5% accuracy, a 44mΩ high-side MOSFET, and independent enable/FAULT pins. The 3.5µs overcurrent response time protects against short circuits and heavy capacitive loads. Built-in soft-start minimizes inrush current during turn-on. The device meets USB current-limiting requirements and is UL listed, CB and Nemko certified.

The TPS2561 operates through four key subsystems: (1) Current Limiting: Each channel has a precision current-sense amplifier that compares the MOSFET current against the limit set by an external resistor on the ILIM pin. When the limit is exceeded, the device transitions to constant-current mode within 3.5µs. (2) Power Switch: A 44mΩ N-channel MOSFET per channel provides the power path, controlled by the EN pin. The soft-start circuit controls the MOSFET gate voltage ramp to limit inrush current into capacitive loads. (3) Fault Reporting: Each channel has an independent open-drain FAULT output that asserts low during overcurrent or overtemperature conditions. (4) Protection: Thermal shutdown protects against excessive power dissipation, and the device includes 15kV/8kV system-level ESD protection on the output pins.
