The TPS2559DRCR from Texas Instruments is a precision adjustable current-limited power-distribution switch in a 10-pin 3x3mm VSON package with exposed thermal pad. The DRC suffix denotes the VSON-10 package, and R indicates tape and reel. The device integrates a 13mOhm N-channel high-side MOSFET with a precision current limiting circuit that can be programmed from 1.2A to 4.7A using a single external resistor from the ILIM pin to ground. The +/-4.4% accuracy at 4.7A current limit is significantly better than typical load switches, making the TPS2559 suitable for USB applications where the current must be precisely controlled to meet USB specifications. The 3.5us short-circuit shutoff time prevents damage from fault conditions by quickly disconnecting the output when a short is detected. The built-in soft-start controls the output rise time to limit inrush current when driving heavy capacitive loads such as downstream USB devices with large bypass capacitors. The FAULT open-drain output asserts low during overcurrent or overtemperature conditions, allowing system monitoring. The 2uA maximum standby current minimizes battery drain when the switch is disabled. The 8kV HBM and 15kV IEC system-level ESD ratings provide robust protection for externally exposed ports.

The TPS2559DRCR uses a high-side N-channel MOSFET as the power switch element, driven by an internal charge pump that generates a gate voltage above the input supply to fully enhance the MOSFET. The 13mOhm RDS(on) is achieved with a large MOSFET geometry in the exposed-pad VSON package for thermal dissipation. The current limiting circuit measures the load current by sensing the voltage across the MOSFET during the on-state (RDS(on) sensing) or through a dedicated sense element. When the current exceeds the threshold set by the RILIM resistor, the device enters a constant-current mode where the gate drive is reduced to maintain the output current at the limit value. If the overload persists and the junction temperature rises, the thermal shutdown circuit turns off the MOSFET. The 3.5us short-circuit shutoff uses a fast comparator that detects the rapid current rise during a hard short and disables the MOSFET before the current reaches destructive levels. The soft-start circuit controls the gate drive ramp-up rate, limiting dV/dt at the output and the associated inrush current (I = C x dV/dt). The reverse current blocking feature prevents current from flowing from OUT to IN when the switch is disabled, protecting the upstream supply.
