The TPS2557DRBR is a precision adjustable current-limited power-distribution switch from Texas Instruments featuring an N-channel MOSFET with 50 mOhm on-resistance and programmable current limit from 0.5A to 5A via an external resistor. The device meets USB 2.0 current limit requirements and provides comprehensive protection including thermal shutdown with auto-retry, undervoltage lockout, and reverse current blocking when the switch is disabled. The open-drain FAULT output reports overcurrent and thermal fault conditions. The 1V logic-compatible enable input allows direct interface with low-voltage microcontrollers. The device operates from 2.5V to 6.5V in the compact VSSOP-8 package suitable for USB port protection and general power distribution applications.

The TPS2557 uses an N-channel MOSFET as the main pass element, driven by an internal charge pump that ensures the gate voltage is sufficient for low RDS(ON) even at the minimum 2.5V input. The current limit circuit senses the MOSFET current and compares it against a reference set by the external RILIM resistor. When the current exceeds the limit, the control loop reduces the gate drive to regulate the current at the set limit, rather than immediately shutting off. This provides a constant-current limiting behavior that allows the output to recover when the overload is removed. If the current-limit condition persists and causes excessive power dissipation, the thermal shutdown activates at approximately 140°C and the switch turns off. After the junction cools by approximately 20°C, the switch automatically retries, cycling on and off until the fault clears. The FAULT open-drain output pulls low during overcurrent and thermal fault conditions.
