The Texas Instruments TPS23882RTQR is an 8-channel Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) controller compliant with IEEE 802.3bt Type-3 2-pair PoE standards. It provides full PD detection, classification, and power management across 8 independent ports with selectable power allocations of 4 W, 7 W, 15.4 W, or 30 W. The device features SRAM programmability enabling in-field firmware updates via I2C for ongoing IEEE compliance and interoperability. With 200 mΩ current sense resistors and dedicated 14-bit ADCs per port, it achieves 2% current sensing accuracy and continuous port monitoring. Programmable power limiting with ±3% accuracy and 1.25 A current limit supports non-standard applications above 60 W sourced.

The TPS23882 manages the complete PoE power delivery sequence per port. First, detection uses 4-point resistance measurement to verify a valid PD signature (19-26.5 kΩ). Then classification determines the PD power requirement through mutual identification per IEEE 802.3bt, including auto-class measurement of actual power consumption. After successful detection and classification, the controller applies power through external MOSFETs with inrush current limiting via foldback protection. During operation, the 14-bit ADC continuously monitors port current, and DC disconnect detection determines when the PD is removed. The I2C interface provides register-based control for auto, semi-auto, or manual operating modes, and the SRAM enables firmware updates for evolving PoE standards compliance.
