The TMP117MAIDRVR is a high-precision digital temperature sensor from Texas Instruments that meets ASTM E1112 and ISO 80601 requirements for electronic patient thermometers. It provides 16-bit temperature results with 0.0078°C resolution and ±0.1°C accuracy from -20°C to +50°C without calibration. The device features an I2C/SMBus-compatible interface, programmable alert functionality, 48-bit general-purpose EEPROM, and NIST traceability. Consuming only 3.5µA at 1Hz conversion rate, it serves as a single-chip digital alternative to PT100/PT1000 RTDs.

The TMP117 operates through three main subsystems: (1) Temperature Sensing: A bandgap-based temperature sensor generates a voltage proportional to absolute temperature (PTAT), which is digitized by an internal ADC with 16-bit resolution. Each device is 100% tested on NIST-traceable production equipment to guarantee ±0.1°C accuracy. (2) Digital Processing: The 16-bit temperature result is stored in the temperature register and can be read over I2C. Configurable averaging modes (1, 8, 32, 64 samples) improve noise performance. A digital offset register allows system-level correction. (3) Alert and EEPROM: Programmable high/low temperature alert thresholds trigger the ALERT pin. The integrated EEPROM stores configuration and provides 48 bits of general-purpose memory, with NIST traceability data.
