The TMC239A-SA from Analog Devices (formerly Trinamic/Maxim) is a smart high-current microstepping stepper motor driver IC in TSSOP-28 package. Unlike integrated MOSFET drivers, the TMC239A drives 8 external N-channel MOSFETs, allowing scalable motor current from a few amps to tens of amps depending on MOSFET selection. The device supports microstepping resolutions from full step to 1/64 step for ultra-smooth motion, with SPI interface for configuration and diagnostics. Integrated protection features include overcurrent detection, overtemperature shutdown, and short-circuit protection. The SA suffix denotes TSSOP-28 package.

The TMC239A-SA operates as a dual full-bridge stepper motor driver controller. (1) The internal DAC generates two sinusoidal current reference waveforms offset by 90 degrees (quadrature) for the two motor phases. The microstep resolution (1 to 1/64) determines the number of discrete steps per electrical cycle, with 1/64 providing 12,800 microsteps per revolution for a 200-step motor. (2) Each full-bridge output drives a pair of external N-channel MOSFETs in a half-bridge configuration. The gate driver provides +/-50mA drive current to switch the MOSFETs. The external MOSFET architecture allows the designer to select MOSFETs optimized for the specific motor current and voltage requirements, from 5A to 50A+ and 24V to 60V. (3) The SPI interface provides access to configuration registers for microstep resolution, current settings, and chopper parameters, as well as readback of diagnostic status including overcurrent, overtemperature, and short-circuit faults. The Step/Direction interface allows simple motion control without SPI during operation.
