The MAX31760AEE+ from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a precision fan-speed controller with nonvolatile lookup table (LUT) that stores up to 8 temperature-to-fan-speed mapping entries, enabling autonomous fan control without continuous host CPU intervention. The device supports 2 independent PWM fan control outputs, a remote diode temperature sensor input for direct CPU/GPU die temperature measurement, and an internal temperature sensor. Fan fault detection identifies stalled, underspeed, or overspeed conditions and generates an interrupt. The SMBus/I2C interface allows system management software to monitor and override fan operation. The AEE suffix denotes QSOP-16 package and + indicates lead-free finish.

The MAX31760AEE+ operates as a precision fan-speed controller. (1) The device measures temperature using either the internal sensor or a remote thermal diode (typically on the CPU or GPU die). The remote diode measurement uses a switched-current technique that compares the forward voltage drop at two different bias currents to determine the diode temperature with +/-1C accuracy. (2) The nonvolatile lookup table (LUT) maps temperature ranges to PWM duty cycles. When the measured temperature falls within a LUT entry range, the corresponding PWM duty cycle is automatically applied to the fan output. This autonomous operation continues without host intervention, reducing system management overhead. (3) The 2 PWM outputs are independently programmable with 8-bit duty cycle resolution (0.4% steps). The PWM frequency is configurable from 10Hz to 100kHz to match different fan types. Fan fault detection monitors the TACH input from each fan and triggers an interrupt if the fan speed deviates from the expected range, indicating a stalled or failing fan.
