The MAX1683EUK+T from Analog Devices (formerly Maxim Integrated) is a high-voltage step-down (buck) LED driver with an integrated 40V MOSFET and high-side current sense amplifier in a compact SOT-23-5 package. The device operates from 6.5V to 28V input and drives LED strings up to 350mA with +/-3% current accuracy. The 500kHz switching frequency minimizes external inductor size, and both PWM and analog dimming are supported for brightness control. The high-side current sense topology allows the LED cathode to be connected to ground, simplifying thermal management. The EUK suffix denotes SOT-23-5 package and T indicates tape and reel packaging.

The MAX1683EUK+T operates as a hysteretic step-down (buck) LED driver. (1) The internal MOSFET connects the input voltage to the inductor and LED string. When the switch is on, current ramps up through the inductor and LEDs. When the current reaches the upper threshold (set by the sense resistor), the switch turns off and the inductor current freewheels through the catch diode, ramping down. When the current reaches the lower threshold, the switch turns on again. This hysteretic control provides inherently stable operation without compensation. (2) The high-side current sense amplifier measures the LED current through a sense resistor between the V+ and CS+ pins. The +/-3% accuracy ensures consistent LED brightness across temperature and production. (3) PWM dimming is achieved by applying a PWM signal to the DIM input, which enables and disables the output at the PWM frequency. Analog dimming adjusts the current setpoint by varying the voltage on the DIM pin. Both methods provide wide dimming range without color shift.
