The TLP185(GB-TPL,SE(T from Toshiba is a high-isolation photocoupler consisting of a GaAlAs infrared LED optically coupled to a photo-transistor detector in a MFSOP-4 surface-mount package. The device provides 3750Vrms electrical isolation between input and output, ensuring safe signal transfer between high-voltage and low-voltage circuits. The GB CTR rank provides 100% to 300% current transfer ratio for reliable signal amplification. The MFSOP-4 (Miniature Flat Small Outline Package) offers a compact footprint with reduced creepage and clearance compared to DIP packages. The device supports data rates up to 1Mbps for communication interface isolation. UL 1577 and VDE 0884 safety approvals ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. The -55C to +110C operating temperature range supports industrial and automotive applications.

The TLP185 uses optical coupling between an LED and a photo-transistor. (1) LED Input: When forward current flows through the infrared LED (pins 1-2), it emits infrared radiation proportional to the current. The LED forward voltage is typically 1.2V at 10mA. (2) Optical Coupling: The infrared light crosses an optically transparent but electrically insulating dielectric within the package, providing 3750Vrms isolation. (3) Photo-Transistor Output: The photo-transistor (pins 3-4) detects the infrared radiation and generates a collector current proportional to the LED forward current. The ratio of output current to input current is the Current Transfer Ratio (CTR), which is 100-300% for the GB rank. (4) Signal Transfer: Digital signals are transferred by switching the LED current on and off. The photo-transistor saturates when the LED is on and turns off when the LED is off. The 1Mbps data rate is limited by the photo-transistor switching speed.
