The TLE9180QK from Infineon Technologies is a highly integrated 3-phase gate driver IC designed for driving external N-Channel MOSFETs in brushless DC (BLDC) and permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) applications. The device integrates three half-bridge gate drivers with internal bootstrap diodes, three current sense amplifiers, and a comprehensive protection and diagnostic system controlled via a 16-bit SPI interface. Operating from a 5.5V to 40V supply, the TLE9180QK generates the gate drive voltages for both high-side and low-side external MOSFETs through an integrated charge pump. The adjustable dead time feature prevents cross-conduction in the external half-bridges, while the three integrated current sense amplifiers enable phase current measurement for field-oriented control (FOC) algorithms. AEC-Q100 qualified and housed in a PG-LQFP-48 package, the TLE9180QK is specifically designed for automotive motor control applications including electric power steering, HVAC blowower motors, and electric water pumps.

The TLE9180QK operates as a 3-phase half-bridge gate driver controlled via a 16-bit SPI interface. The host microcontroller writes SPI commands to set the PWM duty cycle for each of the three half-bridges, configure dead time, and read diagnostic status. The internal charge pump generates a voltage above the supply rail (typically 12V) to drive the high-side N-Channel MOSFET gates, with integrated bootstrap diodes maintaining the bootstrap capacitor charge during switching operation. Each half-bridge driver stage provides 0.5A source and 0.5A sink capability for charging and discharging the external MOSFET gate capacitance. The adjustable dead time inserts a programmable delay between the turn-off of one MOSFET and the turn-on of its complement in each half-bridge, preventing destructive cross-conduction. The three integrated current sense amplifiers measure the voltage across external shunt resistors in each phase, providing amplified signals to the MCU ADC for FOC current loop control. Protection circuits continuously monitor for overtemperature, undervoltage on multiple rails, overcurrent, and short circuit conditions, automatically disabling the outputs and reporting the fault via a dedicated fault pin and SPI status register.
