The TCA9539RGER from Texas Instruments is a 16-bit I2C and SMBus-compatible I/O expander that provides 16 general-purpose I/O pins organized as two 8-bit ports (Port 0 and Port 1). Each I/O can be individually configured as input or output through the Configuration registers, and the Polarity Inversion register allows input polarity to be flipped. An active-low interrupt output (INT) is generated when any input changes state from its registered default, enabling efficient polling-free host interaction. The device supports I2C fast mode up to 400kHz and operates from 1.65V to 5.5V, with I/O voltage levels independent of the supply. The RGER package is a 24-pin VQFN measuring 4mm x 4mm.

The TCA9539 communicates with the host controller via a standard 2-wire I2C interface. The host writes to and reads from internal registers to configure and control the I/O pins. The Configuration register (0x06/0x07) sets each pin as input (1) or output (0). The Output Port register (0x02/0x03) sets the output logic level, while the Input Port register (0x00/0x01) reads the actual pin state. The Polarity Inversion register (0x04/0x05) can invert the logic of input pins. When any input pin changes state, the INT output is driven low, signaling the host to read the input register. The RESET input allows all registers to be initialized to their default states without cycling power.
