The SN74LVC2G14DCKR is a dual Schmitt-trigger inverter from Texas Instruments containing two independent inverter channels with Schmitt-trigger inputs in a single SC70-6 package. The Schmitt-trigger hysteresis provides different thresholds for rising (VT+) and falling (VT–) signals, ensuring clean output transitions even with slowly-slewing or noisy input waveforms. The two channels can be used independently for signal conditioning, or combined for an RC oscillator (with the second inverter providing feedback through a resistor). The device supports 5.5V overvoltage-tolerant inputs, down-translation between voltage domains, Ioff partial-power-down isolation, and ±24mA output drive at 3.3V. The low ground bounce (2V) ensure signal integrity in high-speed designs.

Each of the two inverter channels operates independently with Schmitt-trigger input hysteresis. The input has two thresholds: VT+ (positive-going, typically 1.63V at 3.3V VCC) and VT– (negative-going, typically 1.41V). When input rises through VT+, the output switches low; when input falls through VT–, the output switches high. The hysteresis ΔVT = VT+ – VT– prevents output oscillation on slow or noisy inputs. Both channels share common VCC and GND pins. The Ioff circuit disconnects outputs when VCC = 0V, preventing backflow. The low ground bounce specification means the output GND bounce during simultaneous switching stays below 0.8V, and VOH undershoot stays above 2V — critical for maintaining noise margins in high-speed systems.

  • RC Oscillator: Connect the output of inverter 1 to its input through a resistor (R1), and connect a capacitor from the input to GND. Feed inverter 1’s output to inverter 2’s input. The hysteresis creates a relaxation oscillator with frequency f ≈ 1/(R1×C×ln(VT+/(VCC–VT–))). This provides a simple clock source without a crystal or ceramic resonator.
  • Differential Encoder Squaring: Connect a differential encoder’s A and B channels to the two Schmitt inverters. The hysteresis squares the encoder’s sine/cosine outputs into clean digital signals for an MCU quadrature decoder. Each channel operates independently with its own threshold and hysteresis.
  • Dual Switch Debounce: Debounce two mechanical switches (e.g., UP/DOWN buttons) using the two inverters. Each switch connects to an inverter input through an RC filter. The Schmitt hysteresis ensures single, clean output transitions regardless of contact bounce duration.
