The SG3525ANG from onsemi is a versatile pulse width modulator control circuit optimized for all types of switching power supplies. It integrates a precision 5.1 V voltage reference, an oscillator with sync capability, an error amplifier, a PWM comparator with latch, soft-start circuitry, and dual totem-pole output drivers. The device operates from 8 V to 35 V and supports switching frequencies from 100 Hz to 400 kHz. The shutdown pin provides both pulse-by-pulse current limiting and full shutdown with soft-start recycling, offering comprehensive protection features in a single IC.

The SG3525ANG operates as a voltage-mode PWM controller. An internal oscillator generates a sawtooth waveform determined by external RT and CT components. The error amplifier compares a sample of the output voltage with the 5.1 V reference and produces a control voltage. The PWM comparator compares this control voltage against the oscillator ramp to set the pulse width. A flip-flop alternately enables the two output stages at half the oscillator frequency, producing complementary drive signals for push-pull operation. The shutdown pin (pin 10) immediately sets the PWM latch for fastest turn-off, while simultaneously discharging the soft-start capacitor. A sustained shutdown command fully discharges the soft-start capacitor, enabling a graceful restart upon release.
