The R5F100JEAFA from Renesas Electronics is a member of the RL78/G13 family of low-power 16-bit microcontrollers. Based on the RL78 core which combines the instruction sets of the 78K0R and R8C families, it delivers high code efficiency and processing performance at up to 32MHz. The device features 64KB of flash program memory, 4KB of RAM, and 4KB of data flash for parameter storage. Rich peripheral integration includes a 12-channel 10-bit ADC, multiple serial interfaces (4x UART, 4x CSI/SPI, 4x simplified I2C), timers, and a comparator. With ultra-low power consumption of 240μA/MHz during CPU operation and 0.68μA in standby mode, it is ideal for battery-powered and energy-conscious applications.

The R5F100JEAFA operates around four primary subsystems. (1) The RL78 CPU core executes the 78K0R-compatible instruction set with 16-bit processing at up to 32MHz, accessing 64KB flash and 4KB RAM through a unified address space. The core supports background operation (BGO) for flash programming and features a hardware multiplier for efficient computation. (2) The clock system provides flexible clock sources including a high-speed on-chip oscillator (up to 32MHz), external crystal/ceramic resonator, and low-speed on-chip oscillator (15kHz) for low-power modes. (3) The analog subsystem includes a 10-bit successive approximation ADC with 12 input channels and conversion times as fast as 3.5μs, plus a comparator for simple threshold detection. (4) The serial communication subsystem supports multiple UART, SPI, and I2C interfaces for connecting to external sensors, displays, and communication modules.
