The NSI50350AST3G from onsemi is a 50mA constant current regulator (CCR) in a SMA (DO-214AC) package using self-biased transistor (SBT) technology. As a simple two-terminal device, it acts as a constant current source that automatically regulates LED current to 50mA (+/-10%) without external resistors or control circuitry. The maximum operating voltage of 50V supports long LED strings. The device has a negative temperature coefficient of 0.15%/C, which naturally reduces current as temperature increases, providing inherent thermal protection. Forward voltage is typically 1.8V at 50mA, allowing operation with minimal headroom.

The NSI50350AST3G uses onsemi’s self-biased transistor (SBT) technology. (1) Self-Biasing: An internal JFET and BJT network creates a current mirror that maintains constant current regardless of voltage across the device (within the operating range). The JFET provides the bias current for the BJT current regulator. (2) Constant Current: The regulated current is determined by the internal transistor geometry and is fixed at 50mA. The device maintains this current as long as the voltage across it is between VF (1.8V) and the maximum operating voltage (50V). (3) Negative Temperature Coefficient: As junction temperature increases, the regulated current decreases at approximately 0.15%/C. This provides self-thermal limiting in LED strings, preventing thermal runaway. (4) Parallel Operation: Multiple CCRs can be connected in parallel to increase total LED current (e.g., two devices for 100mA).
