The MSP430F425IPMR from Texas Instruments is an ultra-low-power 16-bit RISC microcontroller with three independent 16-bit sigma-delta ADCs and a 128-segment LCD driver in a 64-pin LQFP package. The suffix decodes as: F425=16KB Flash/512B RAM with SD16_A ADC, I=industrial temperature range (-40 to +85C), PM=LQFP-64 package, R=tape and reel. The three sigma-delta ADCs (SD16_A module) provide 16-bit resolution with differential inputs, ideal for precision measurement of voltage and current in single-phase metering applications. The integrated LCD driver supports up to 128 segments (static, 2-mux, 3-mux, or 4-mux modes), eliminating the need for an external display controller. With 400uA active current at 1MHz and 1.6uA standby, it enables battery-powered metering applications with 10+ year operating life.

The MSP430F425 operates through five subsystems: (1) 16-bit RISC CPU: A 16-bit CPU with 16 registers and constant generators for efficient code execution. The 125ns instruction cycle at 8MHz enables rapid computation. The FLL+ clock module locks the DCO to a stable frequency using the 32.768kHz watch crystal. (2) SD16_A ADC Module: Three independent 16-bit sigma-delta ADCs with differential inputs. Each ADC can sample at up to 1ksps with 16-bit effective resolution. The sigma-delta architecture provides inherent anti-aliasing filtering and excellent 50/60Hz rejection. The ADCs are ideal for measuring voltage and current in metering applications using shunt resistors or current transformers. (3) LCD Driver: Supports static, 2-mux, 3-mux, and 4-mux LCD modes with up to 128 segments. Dedicated LCD memory stores segment data. The LCD timing is derived from the Basic Timer1, freeing the CPU from display refresh tasks. (4) Power Management: Five low-power modes (LPM0-LPM4) reduce current from 400uA (active) to 1.6uA (standby, CPU off) to 0.1uA (off, RAM retention). The DCO wakes from standby in less than 6us. (5) USART: A single serial communication interface configurable as asynchronous UART or synchronous SPI, enabling communication with host systems or peripheral devices.
