The MOC3043XSM from Isocom Components is a zero-crossing triac driver optocoupler in a SMDIP-6 surface-mount package. The device consists of a GaAs infrared LED optically coupled to a monolithic silicon zero-crossing bilateral triac driver. The zero-crossing detector ensures the triac only triggers when the AC mains voltage crosses zero, minimizing electromagnetic interference and inrush current to resistive loads. With 400V peak blocking voltage, the device supports 240VAC mains operation. The 5.3kVrms isolation voltage provides safe separation between low-voltage control and high-voltage load circuits. The 5mA maximum LED trigger current allows direct drive from microcontrollers. UL 1577 and IEC 60747-5-5 safety approvals ensure compliance for regulatory requirements.

The MOC3043XSM integrates an infrared LED and a zero-crossing triac driver in an optically coupled package. (1) LED Input: When forward current flows through the infrared LED (pins 1-2), it emits infrared radiation that is detected by the photosensitive triac driver on the output side. The minimum trigger current (IFT) of 5mA ensures reliable turn-on. (2) Zero-Crossing Detector: The output triac driver includes a zero-crossing detection circuit that prevents triggering when the mains voltage is far from zero. The triac can only be triggered when the mains voltage is within approximately +/-20V of zero crossing. This reduces the rate of change of load current (di/dt) and minimizes EMI. (3) Output Triac: The output triac can drive the gate of an external power triac for controlling high-current AC loads. The 400V blocking rating allows direct connection across 240VAC mains. (4) Isolation: The optical coupling provides 5.3kVrms electrical isolation between the LED input and the triac output, ensuring safety in mains-referenced circuits.
