The MOC3021M is a zero-crossing triac driver optocoupler from onsemi designed for interfacing microcontrollers to AC power loads. It combines a GaAs infrared LED optically coupled to a zero-crossing triac driver chip. The zero-crossing detector ensures the triac turns on only when the AC voltage is near zero, minimizing inrush current and reducing electromagnetic interference. The 400V peak blocking voltage supports direct operation from 240VAC mains. The 7500V isolation voltage provides safe galvanic separation between the low-voltage control circuit and the high-voltage AC line. The 5mA typical trigger current is compatible with most MCU GPIO outputs. The output can directly drive gate currents of power triacs rated up to 25A.

The MOC3021M consists of a GaAs infrared LED optically coupled to a silicon detector chip that integrates a zero-crossing detector and a triac driver. When the LED is forward-biased, infrared light falls on the detector, turning on the zero-crossing detector circuit. The zero-crossing detector monitors the voltage across the main triac terminals (pins 4 and 6). If the AC line voltage is below approximately 20V (near zero crossing), the detector allows the driver triac to fire, applying gate current to the external power triac. If the AC voltage is above the zero-crossing threshold, the driver is inhibited until the next zero crossing. This zero-crossing turn-on minimizes the rate of change of current (di/dt) in the load, reducing EMI and stress on the power triac. The 7500V isolation between the LED and the triac driver is achieved through the optical coupling path, which has no electrical connection. The driver triac is designed with high dv/dt immunity (10V/µs min) to prevent false triggering from fast voltage transients on the AC line. The LED trigger current of 5mA typical at room temperature increases at lower temperatures, requiring 15mA guaranteed trigger current over the full temperature range.
