The MM3Z36VT1G from onsemi is a 500 mW surface-mount Zener voltage regulator diode in the ultra-small SOD-323 package, providing a nominal Zener voltage of 36 V with +/-2% tolerance. The device features typical Zener impedance of 70 Ohm at the test current of 5 mA, and maximum reverse leakage current of 0.1 uA at 27 V, making it suitable for precision voltage referencing and low-power biasing applications.

The MM3Z36VT1G operates using the Zener breakdown phenomenon in a heavily doped P-N junction. When a reverse bias voltage exceeding the Zener breakdown voltage (36 V) is applied, the junction enters avalanche breakdown where a small change in voltage causes a large change in current while the voltage remains nearly constant. By connecting the Zener in parallel with the load and a series current-limiting resistor, the output voltage is clamped to 36 V.
