The MCP4011-103E/SN from Microchip is a single-channel, 64-position digital potentiometer with 10 kOhm end-to-end resistance. The device uses a simple UP/DOWN serial interface with chip select, allowing wiper position to be incremented or decremented one step at a time. Non-volatile EEPROM stores the wiper position, ensuring the setting is retained across power cycles. The 10 kOhm linear taper resistor string provides 64 discrete resistance steps with approximately 157 Ohms per step. The device operates from a single 2.7V to 5.5V supply with ultra-low 1uA static current, making it ideal for battery-powered applications. The MCP4011 serves as a direct replacement for mechanical trim potentiometers, offering improved reliability, smaller size, and digital control. The MCP4011-103E/SN is a 6-bit digital potentiometer with UP/DOWN control. (1) Resistor String: The 10 kOhm resistor string consists of 63 equal-value resistive elements connected in series between terminals A and B, creating 64 tap points. Solid-state CMOS switches connect the wiper terminal W to any one of the 64 tap points. (2) UP/DOWN Interface: When CS# is low, pulses on the U/D pin increment (high) or decrement (low) the wiper position by one step per pulse. When CS# transitions from low to high, the current wiper position is stored in non-volatile EEPROM. (3) Non-Volatile Storage: On power-up, the wiper position is loaded from EEPROM, restoring the last programmed setting. The EEPROM supports over 1 million write cycles. (4) Resistance Calculation: The wiper-to-B resistance at code N is R_WB = (N/63) x R_AB + R_W, where R_AB = 10 kOhm and R_W is the wiper resistance (approximately 75 Ohms).
