The MCP2551T-I/SN from Microchip Technology is an industry-standard high-speed CAN transceiver that provides the physical layer interface between a CAN protocol controller and the physical CAN bus. Fully compliant with the ISO 11898-2 standard, it supports data rates up to 1Mbps for high-speed CAN applications. The device features robust bus protection including ESD protection greater than 4kV, short-circuit protection to battery and ground, and common-mode voltage range of -12V to +12V. A low-power standby mode reduces supply current for battery-powered applications. The slope control feature allows reduction of the CAN bus signal slew rate to minimize EMI in lower-speed applications. The device operates from a single 5V supply and is available in a standard SOIC-8 package.

The MCP2551 translates the TTL-level CAN controller signals (TXD and RXD) to the differential CAN bus signals (CANH and CANL). When TXD is driven low (dominant), the internal driver circuit drives CANH high (approximately 3.5V) and CANL low (approximately 1.5V), creating a differential voltage of about 2V on the bus. When TXD is high (recessive), both CANH and CANL are biased to approximately 2.5V through internal bias networks, resulting in zero differential voltage. The receiver continuously monitors the CANH-CANL differential voltage and drives RXD low when the differential exceeds the receiver threshold (approximately 0.9V), and high when below. The slope control circuit limits the rise and fall times of the driver output at lower data rates to reduce EMI. In standby mode, the driver is disabled while the receiver remains active for wake-up detection.
