The Microchip MCP23008-E/SO is an 8-bit general-purpose I/O expander that provides remote I/O expansion for most microcontroller families via the I2C serial interface. Three hardware address pins allow up to eight MCP23008 devices to share a single I2C bus, providing up to 64 additional I/O pins. Each of the eight GPIO pins is individually configurable as input or output with 25 mA sink/source capability. The device supports I2C clock rates up to 1.7 MHz for high-speed data transfer. The configurable interrupt output can signal input changes on either a pin-change basis or when inputs differ from a programmed default value, with the interrupt capture register preserving the pin state at the moment of interrupt. The E-grade temperature range extends to +125°C for industrial and automotive applications.

The MCP23008-E/SO communicates with the host microcontroller via the I2C interface using a 7-bit slave address composed of a fixed prefix (0b0100) plus the three hardware address pins (A2, A1, A0), giving addresses from 0x20 to 0x27. Internal registers control I/O direction (IODIR), output state (GPIO), input polarity (IPOL), and interrupt behavior (GPINTEN, INTCON, DEFVAL). When any input pin changes state from its corresponding DEFVAL register value (or simply changes, depending on INTCON configuration), the INT output is asserted. The INTCAP register captures the GPIO port state at the moment of the interrupt, ensuring no input changes are missed. The OLAT register provides output latch control independent of the GPIO read register. The SEQOP bit enables sequential register access mode, allowing multiple registers to be read or written in a single I2C transaction for improved throughput.
