The Microchip MCP1700T-3302E TTVAO is a low-quiescent-current CMOS LDO regulator providing a fixed 3.3 V output at up to 250 mA. Its 1.0 µA typical ground current makes it one of the industry’s lowest Iq LDOs, ideal for always-on battery-powered applications where standby current directly impacts battery life. The 178 mV dropout voltage at full load allows operation with minimal headroom from batteries or switching pre-regulators. The device is stable with just 1 µF of output capacitance (ceramic), enabling compact PCB layouts. AEC-Q100 qualification and -40 °C to +125 °C operating range support automotive power management applications. Short-circuit current limiting and over-temperature shutdown protect the device and system from fault conditions. The SOT-89-3 package provides better thermal performance than SOT-23 due to its larger thermal pad.

The MCP1700 uses a PMOS pass transistor controlled by a precision voltage reference and error amplifier. The error amplifier compares a fraction of the output voltage (via an internal resistor divider) with the internal bandgap reference (1.2 V typical). Any difference drives the gate of the PMOS pass element to maintain the output at 3.3 V. The PMOS topology is key to achieving the low 1.0 µA quiescent current — unlike bipolar LDOs that require significant base drive current, a MOSFET gate draws essentially zero DC current. The dropout voltage is the minimum VGS required to keep the PMOS in saturation, which is 178 mV at 250 mA. The device includes current limiting that folds back the output current during a short circuit, and a thermal shutdown that disables the output when junction temperature exceeds approximately 150 °C. No reverse current flows from output to input due to the body diode orientation of the PMOS device, eliminating the need for an external blocking diode in battery-backup applications.
