The MC7815CTG is a 15V 1A positive voltage regulator from onsemi in TO-220, part of the classic 78xx series. It uses a series-pass NPN transistor in an emitter-follower configuration controlled by a feedback loop. The internal architecture: (1) A bandgap voltage reference (7V typical) provides a stable reference; (2) A resistor divider (internal) scales the output voltage to match the reference; (3) An error amplifier compares the scaled output with the reference and drives the series-pass transistor to maintain regulation. The dropout voltage is 2V minimum at 1A (VIN must be at least 17V for 15V output), making this a standard (not low-dropout) regulator. The quiescent current is 5mA typical (8mA max), flowing from input to ground regardless of load. The regulator includes: (1) Current limiting at 2.2A typical (short-circuit protection); (2) Thermal shutdown at 150C junction temperature; (3) Safe operating area (SOA) protection that reduces current limit as input-output differential increases. The TO-220 package provides 5C/W junction-to-case thermal resistance, requiring a heatsink for sustained 1A operation: at VIN=25V, IOUT=1A, the dissipation is (25-15)x1=10W, raising the junction 50C above case temperature. The thermal shutdown protects against heatsink failure. The input bypass capacitor (0.33uF) prevents oscillation with long input leads, and the output capacitor (0.1uF) improves transient response. The -CTG suffix specifies TO-220, lead-free. The MC7815 is used in industrial power supplies, audio amplifier pre-stages, and legacy designs.
