The MBRS140T3G from onsemi is a surface-mount Schottky barrier power rectifier rated for 1A average forward current and 40V peak reverse voltage. Employing the Schottky barrier principle with epitaxial construction and oxide passivation, it achieves a very low forward voltage drop of 0.55V max at 1A. The majority-carrier conduction mechanism eliminates minority carrier storage, resulting in virtually zero reverse recovery time ideal for high-frequency switching applications. It is AEC-Q101 qualified and PPAP capable for automotive use.

The MBRS140T3G operates based on the Schottky barrier principle: (1) Metal-Semiconductor Junction: Unlike conventional PN junction diodes, a Schottky diode forms a rectifying junction between metal (typically molybdenum or tungsten) and N-type silicon. This creates a lower barrier potential, resulting in a lower forward voltage drop (0.55V vs 0.7-1.0V for silicon PN diodes). (2) Majority Carrier Conduction: Current flows via majority carriers (electrons) only, eliminating minority carrier storage and the associated reverse recovery time seen in PN diodes. This enables very fast switching with negligible recovery losses at high frequencies. (3) Guard-Ring Protection: An integrated guard-ring around the Schottky junction provides overvoltage and ESD protection, enhancing reliability under stress conditions.
