The MAX3232ECPWR is a dual-channel RS-232 line driver and receiver from Texas Instruments with enhanced +/-15kV IEC ESD protection. The device consists of two line drivers, two line receivers, and a dual charge-pump circuit. It meets the requirements of TIA/EIA-232-F and provides the electrical interface between asynchronous communication controllers and serial-port connectors. The integrated charge pump and four small 0.1uF external capacitors enable operation from a single 3V to 5.5V supply. The device operates at data rates up to 250 kbps and is pin-compatible with the industry-standard MAX232 device.

The MAX3232ECPWR uses an internal dual charge-pump circuit to generate the +/-5.5V voltage rails required for RS-232 compliant output levels from a single 3V to 5.5V supply. The charge pump uses four external 0.1uF capacitors for voltage doubling and inversion. The driver circuits convert TTL/CMOS logic levels to RS-232 compliant voltage levels (+/-5V to +/-7V), while the receivers convert RS-232 input signals back to TTL/CMOS logic levels. All RS-232 bus pins incorporate enhanced ESD protection structures rated at +/-15kV using IEC 61000-4-2 air-gap discharge and +/-8kV contact discharge.
