The MAX13054ESA+T is a CAN bus protector and common-mode filter from Analog Devices that provides robust protection for CAN transceivers against electrical faults and ESD events. It offers ±40V DC fault protection and ±25 kV IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection on CANH and CANL bus pins, along with integrated common-mode filtering for improved electromagnetic compatibility. The device is passive (no power supply required), adds only 8 pF of capacitance to the bus, and operates over the full automotive temperature range of -40°C to +125°C. It is placed between the CAN transceiver and the bus connector to protect against faults originating from off-board connections.

The MAX13054 operates as a passive protection and filtering device placed between the CAN transceiver and the physical bus. For fault protection, internal clamping diodes limit the voltage on CANH and CANL to safe levels when exposed to overvoltage conditions up to ±40V. For ESD protection, transient voltage suppression (TVS) structures absorb electrostatic discharge energy up to ±25 kV per IEC 61000-4-2. The integrated common-mode filter uses passive LC structures to attenuate high-frequency common-mode noise that can cause EMC compliance issues, while the 8 pF differential capacitance ensures minimal impact on CAN signal integrity at data rates up to 1 Mbps. The device requires no power supply and draws only ±1 µA leakage current, making it transparent to the bus during normal operation.
