The LTC7801EUFD#TRPBF is a high-performance synchronous step-down DC/DC controller from Analog Devices that drives an all N-channel MOSFET power stage from input voltages up to 140V. It utilizes a constant-frequency current mode architecture with phase-lockable frequency up to 850kHz. The OPTI-DRIVE feature allows programmable gate drive voltage from 5V to 10V, enabling use of logic-level or standard-level FETs for maximum efficiency. The integrated bootstrap switch eliminates the need for an external bootstrap diode, while an internal charge pump supports 100% duty cycle operation. With only 40μA no-load quiescent current and OPTI-LOOP compensation, it is optimized for battery-powered and automotive power systems requiring high efficiency across wide load ranges.

The LTC7801 operates around four key subsystems. (1) The current-mode control loop uses a constant-frequency architecture where the top MOSFET on-time is controlled by the error amplifier output (ITH pin) through a PWM comparator that senses the inductor current via the SENSE+ and SENSE- pins. This provides cycle-by-cycle current limiting and inherent input voltage rejection. (2) The OPTI-DRIVE gate drive subsystem generates programmable 5-10V gate drive from an internal LDO or external NMOS LDO via DRVCC, driving the top and bottom N-channel MOSFETs through the TG and BG outputs with adaptive dead-time control. (3) The charge pump and bootstrap subsystem enable 100% duty cycle operation by maintaining gate drive voltage even when the top MOSFET is continuously on. (4) The mode control subsystem allows selection between continuous conduction, pulse-skipping, and Burst Mode operation via the MODE pin, optimizing efficiency across the entire load range.
