The STMicroelectronics LPS22HHTR is an ultra-compact piezoresistive absolute pressure sensor functioning as a digital-output barometer with 0.5 hPa absolute accuracy and 0.65 Pa RMS noise. The device measures absolute pressure from 260 hPa to 1260 hPa (equivalent to altitude range of approximately -5,000m to +10,000m above sea level) with 24-bit output resolution. The ultra-small 2.0 x 2.0 x 0.73 mm HLGA package is 70% smaller than competing pressure sensors, enabling integration into smartphones, wearables, and drones where PCB area is at a premium. The embedded temperature compensation and factory calibration ensure accurate pressure readings without user calibration—the trimming values are stored in non-volatile memory and loaded automatically at power-on. The 128-slot FIFO buffer stores pressure and temperature data, allowing the host processor to remain in sleep mode until a batch of data is ready, reducing system power consumption. The configurable output data rate (1 Hz to 200 Hz) supports both slow weather-monitoring and fast altitude-tracking applications. Communication is via I2C (up to 400 kHz), SPI (up to 10 MHz), or MIPI I3C. The LPS22HH uses a silicon MEMS piezoresistive sensing element manufactured using ST’s dedicated MEMS process. A suspended silicon membrane deflects under applied pressure, inducing an imbalance in a Wheatstone bridge of piezoresistive elements embedded in the membrane. The analog output of the bridge is amplified by a low-noise instrumentation amplifier and converted to digital by a 24-bit sigma-delta ADC. An internal temperature sensor simultaneously measures the die temperature, and the digital logic applies factory-calibrated temperature compensation coefficients to the raw pressure reading. The compensated 24-bit pressure data and 16-bit temperature data are stored in output registers accessible via I2C/SPI. The FIFO buffer can store 128 samples of pressure and temperature data in six operating modes: bypass, FIFO, continuous (dynamic-stream), continuous-to-FIFO, bypass-to-continuous, and bypass-to-FIFO—enabling sophisticated data capture scenarios such as triggered burst recording. The programmable interrupt generator can assert the INT_DRDY pin on data-ready, FIFO threshold, or pressure threshold crossing events, enabling event-driven architectures that minimize host processor wake-ups.
