The LPS22HBTR from STMicroelectronics is an ultra-compact piezoresistive absolute pressure sensor in a 10-pin HCLGA (holeless ceramic land grid array) package measuring only 2.5 x 2.5 x 0.73mm. The TR denotes tape and reel packaging. The device measures absolute pressure from 260 to 1260 hPa with 24-bit resolution and outstanding +/-0.1 hPa relative accuracy at 25C over the 900-1100 hPa range, enabling floor-level altitude detection in indoor navigation applications. The sensor consists of a MEMS piezoresistive pressure sensing element and an ASIC with signal conditioning, A/D conversion, and digital interface. The ASIC provides temperature compensation, first-level offset calibration, and programmable ODR (1-75Hz). An embedded 32-slot FIFO can store pressure and temperature data in bypass, FIFO, continuous, or watermark modes, reducing host processor read frequency. The embedded temperature sensor provides +/-2C accuracy for additional system temperature monitoring. Both I2C (up to 1MHz) and SPI (up to 10MHz) interfaces are supported. The ultra-low 12.5uA current consumption at 50Hz ODR and 0.5uA power-down mode make it ideal for battery-powered wearables.

The LPS22HBTR operates through three subsystems: (1) MEMS Sensing Element: A silicon membrane with embedded piezoresistive elements forms a Wheatstone bridge. Atmospheric pressure deflects the membrane, changing the piezoresistor values and producing a differential voltage proportional to the applied pressure. The membrane is designed to measure absolute pressure relative to a vacuum reference cavity sealed during manufacturing. (2) Signal Conditioning ASIC: The bridge output is amplified by a programmable gain amplifier (PGA), converted to digital by a 24-bit sigma-delta ADC, and processed by a digital filter. Factory-calibrated offset and temperature coefficients are stored in on-chip non-volatile memory and applied in real-time to compensate for process variation and temperature drift. The compensated pressure data is available in hPa units (1 LSB = 1/4096 hPa). (3) Digital Interface: Pressure and temperature data are accessed through I2C or SPI registers. A configurable ODR selects the update rate (1-75Hz). The FIFO accumulates data samples to reduce host polling frequency. The DRDY signal indicates when new data is available. A hardware low-pass filter reduces noise at lower ODRs.
