The LMZ31520RLGT from Texas Instruments is a complete 20A integrated power module in a 15x16x5.8mm B4QFN-72 package that combines a DC/DC buck regulator with integrated power MOSFETs, a shielded inductor, and passive components into a single surface-mount module. The RLG suffix denotes the 72-pin B4QFN package, and T indicates tape and reel. The module requires as few as three external components (input capacitor, output capacitor, and VADJ resistor) to implement a complete 20A point-of-load power supply. The 3V to 14.5V input range supports common bus voltages (3.3V, 5V, 12V), while the 0.6V to 3.6V adjustable output with 1% reference accuracy covers FPGA core, I/O, and DSP power requirements. The 96% peak efficiency at 12V input and 3.3V output minimizes thermal design challenges. The D-CAP control mode provides ultra-fast load step response without requiring external compensation, simplifying design. The 8.6C/W thermal impedance (junction-to-ambient on a standard PCB) allows the module to dissipate up to 5W at 85C ambient without forced air. The module meets EN55022 Class A EMI emissions with the integrated shielded inductor, eliminating external EMI filtering.

The LMZ31520RLGT is a complete synchronous buck regulator integrated into a single module. The power stage consists of high-side and low-side N-channel MOSFETs controlled by the D-CAP mode controller, and a shielded power inductor. The D-CAP mode uses adaptive on-time control where the on-time duration is calculated from the input-output voltage ratio to maintain a pseudo-constant switching frequency. When the output voltage drops below the reference, the controller triggers an on-time pulse. The integrated shielded inductor stores energy during the on-time and delivers it to the output during the off-time. The remote sense pins (SENSE+ and AGND) connect directly at the load, compensating for PCB trace resistance and ensuring accurate voltage regulation at the point of load. The VADJ pin with an external resistor to AGND sets the output voltage through the internal 0.6V reference and feedback divider. The selectable switching frequency (300-850kHz) is set by the FREQ_SEL pin, allowing designers to trade off efficiency (lower frequency) against solution size (higher frequency). The module’s integrated passive components (bootstrap capacitor, V5V bypass, and compensation) are factory-optimized for the D-CAP mode, eliminating the need for any loop compensation design.
