The LM94023BITMX from Texas Instruments is a precision analog output temperature sensor that provides a voltage inversely proportional to temperature. The device operates from a wide 1.5 V to 5.5 V supply with only 9 uA supply current, making it ideal for battery-powered applications. Four selectable gain values (-5.5, -7.5, -9.5, and -11.5 mV/C) are available via the GS pin configuration, allowing designers to optimize the output voltage range for their ADC input range. The class-AB output stage can drive large capacitive loads without oscillation, enabling long PCB traces and cable connections. Accuracy is +/-1.5C at 25C, making it suitable for thermal management and protection applications.

The LM94023BITMX uses a precision bandgap-based temperature sensing circuit where the difference in VBE voltage between two bipolar transistors operating at different current densities is proportional to absolute temperature (PTAT). This PTAT voltage is amplified and converted to an inversely proportional output (higher temperature = lower voltage) through an output amplifier stage. The gain select (GS) pins configure the amplifier gain, selecting one of four sensitivity values. At GS=0 (both GS pins LOW), the sensitivity is -5.5 mV/C, providing the widest output voltage range. The output voltage at any temperature can be calculated as: VOUT = 1.863V – (T – 25) x 5.5mV/C (for GS=0). The class-AB output stage uses complementary NPN/PNP output transistors that can both source and sink current, allowing the output to drive capacitive loads up to 1000 pF directly and larger loads with a series resistor.
