The LM73606RNPT from Texas Instruments is a 6A synchronous step-down voltage regulator with integrated high-side and low-side MOSFETs. It accepts input voltages from 3.5V to 36V and produces adjustable output voltages from 1V to 18V with ±1% reference accuracy. The device operates at adjustable switching frequencies from 200kHz to 2.2MHz, allowing optimization of efficiency, solution size, and EMI performance. In PFM mode, the quiescent current is only 25μA for high light-load efficiency, while forced PWM mode eliminates frequency variation for noise-sensitive applications. Internal soft-start, power good output, and comprehensive protection features make it a complete power solution for automotive, industrial, and telecom applications.

The LM73606 operates as a current-mode synchronous buck converter. (1) The control loop uses peak current-mode modulation where the error amplifier compares the FB pin voltage against the 1V internal reference, driving the COMP pin to control the duty cycle through the PWM comparator. The high-side MOSFET on-time is adjusted based on the inductor peak current sensed through the internal current sense circuit, providing cycle-by-cycle current limiting and fast transient response. (2) The integrated power stage consists of a high-side NMOS switch and a low-side NMOS synchronous rectifier, both optimized for low RDS(on) to minimize conduction losses at 6A output. The bootstrap circuit provides gate drive for the high-side FET. (3) The mode control logic selects between PFM mode for high efficiency at light loads (where switching cycles are skipped and IQ drops to 25μA) and forced PWM mode for constant-frequency operation regardless of load.
