The LM567CMX from Texas Instruments is a general-purpose tone decoder that uses a phase-locked loop (PLL) architecture to detect a specific frequency tone. It can detect tones from 0.01 Hz to 500 kHz with a 20:1 frequency range using a single external resistor. The output is a logic-compatible open-collector transistor capable of sinking 100 mA. Bandwidth is adjustable from 0 to 14% of the center frequency via an external capacitor. The device provides high out-of-band signal rejection and immunity to false triggering, making it ideal for tone signaling and frequency detection in communication and control systems.

The LM567CMX uses a phase-locked loop (PLL) architecture consisting of a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO), a phase detector, an amplifier, and an output driver. The VCO center frequency is set by external timing resistor (R1) and capacitor (C1) according to f0 = 1/(1.1 x R1 x C1). When an input signal at or near the VCO frequency is applied, the PLL locks and the output transistor turns on (sinks current). The loop filter capacitor (C2) at pin 2 determines the detection bandwidth. With input signals below 200 mV rms, bandwidth is calculated from the C2 value and input amplitude. Above 200 mV rms, bandwidth depends on the product of f0 and C2. The output at pin 8 is an open-collector NPN transistor that sinks up to 100 mA when a valid tone is detected.
