The LM5085QMYE/NOPB from Texas Instruments is an automotive-grade high-efficiency PFET switching regulator controller designed for buck converter applications with wide input voltage ranges. Operating from 4.5V to 75V, it uses a constant on-time regulation principle that eliminates the need for loop compensation and results in ultra-fast load transient response. The PFET architecture allows 100% duty cycle operation for low dropout voltage conditions. Current limiting can be implemented using either the RDS(ON) of the external PFET or an external sense resistor. The device features an internal soft-start timer, an integrated high-voltage bias regulator, and thermal shutdown protection. AEC-Q100 Grade 1 qualified, the LM5085QMYE/NOPB is suitable for demanding automotive applications operating over the -40 to 125 C temperature range.

The LM5085QMYE/NOPB operates using a constant on-time (COT) control scheme. Key subsystems include: (1) On-Time Timer – generates a fixed on-time pulse inversely proportional to the input voltage, maintaining nearly constant switching frequency; (2) Comparator-Based Control – the output voltage is compared to a precision +/-2% reference via a feedback comparator, triggering an on-time pulse when the output falls below the set point; (3) PFET Gate Driver – drives an external P-channel MOSFET with adequate gate charge for switching at up to 1MHz; (4) High-Voltage Bias Regulator – generates the internal low-voltage supply from the high-voltage input; (5) Current Limit – monitors the voltage across the external PFET or sense resistor and terminates the on-time pulse if the current threshold is exceeded; (6) Soft-Start – an internal timer ramps up the current limit at startup to reduce inrush current.
