The LM358P from Texas Instruments is a dual general-purpose operational amplifier that has been an industry workhorse for decades. Its key advantage is true single-supply operation from 3V to 30V, with a common-mode input range that includes ground (0V). This allows the LM358 to amplify signals near ground without a negative supply—critical for single-ended sensor interfaces. The total supply current is just 0.7mA for both amplifiers at 5V, making it suitable for battery-powered applications. The 700kHz gain-bandwidth and 0.3V/µs slew rate limit its use to DC and low-frequency applications (below ~50kHz at unity gain). The PNP input stage allows the input common-mode range to extend to ground, while the class-AB output stage can both source (20mA) and sink (10mA at 200mV) current. The P suffix denotes the PDIP-8 through-hole package. The LM358B is an improved version with 1.2MHz GBW, 300µA Iq, internal EMI filter, and 2mV offset.

The LM358P consists of two independent operational amplifiers, each using a PNP differential input stage that allows the common-mode input voltage to include ground. The PNP input transistors are biased so that when both inputs are at 0V, the transistors are still in the active region, and the amplifier functions normally. The output stage is a class-AB push-pull configuration that can actively pull the output high (source current) through a PNP transistor and pull low (sink current) through an NPN transistor. However, the sink capability is limited: at VO=200mV, the sink current is only 12µA typical, which can be problematic for driving low-impedance loads to ground. This is why the LM358 is often used with pull-down resistors to ensure the output can reach 0V. The internal compensation capacitor provides stability at unity gain without external components. When used as a comparator (open-loop), the output swings between approximately 0.7V (saturation voltage) and VCC-1.5V, which is sufficient for many digital logic interfaces with level shifting.

LM358P uses the PDIP-8 package with the same dual op-amp pinout as LM358N: Pin 1 = Output A, Pin 2 = Inverting Input A (-), Pin 3 = Non-inverting Input A (+), Pin 4 = GND/VEE, Pin 5 = Non-inverting Input B (+), Pin 6 = Inverting Input B (-), Pin 7 = Output B, Pin 8 = VCC. The P suffix denotes TI plastic DIP package (equivalent to N suffix from other manufacturers). This device is pin-for-pin compatible with LM2904P, LM358AVP, and TLC27M2CP op-amps. The input common-mode voltage range includes ground, enabling true single-supply operation from 3V to 32V.
