The LM339N from Texas Instruments contains four independent precision voltage comparators in a single 14-pin PDIP package. Each comparator has an open-collector output that can sink up to 16mA, making it directly compatible with TTL, CMOS, and MOS logic. The open-collector architecture allows wired-AND connections: multiple outputs tied together with a single pull-up resistor create a logical AND — the combined output is HIGH only when all individual outputs are HIGH (i.e., all comparators see their non-inverting input above their inverting input). The input common-mode voltage range extends from ground (0V) to V+−1.5V, which is unique because most comparators cannot accept inputs at the negative rail. The 2mV typical input offset voltage provides excellent precision for threshold detection. The 0.8mA total supply current for all four comparators makes the LM339 ideal for battery-powered applications. The N suffix denotes the commercial temperature range (0°C to +70°C) in a PDIP-14 package.

Each of the four comparators in the LM339N continuously compares the voltage at its non-inverting input (+) with the voltage at its inverting input (−). When V+ > V−, the output transistor is OFF and the open-collector output floats (appears HIGH when a pull-up resistor is connected to a positive supply). When V+ < V−, the output transistor turns ON and sinks current to ground, pulling the output LOW. There is no feedback — the comparator operates in open-loop, providing a digital (HIGH/LOW) output based on the relative input voltages. The output cannot source current; it can only sink. A pull-up resistor (typically 1kΩ to 10kΩ) from the output to the logic supply voltage is always required. For a voltage threshold detector, a reference voltage is applied to the inverting input (e.g., from a voltage divider) and the signal is applied to the non-inverting input. When the signal exceeds the reference, the output goes HIGH. For a window comparator, two comparators are used: one detects the upper limit and the other detects the lower limit; their open-collector outputs are tied together so the combined output is HIGH only when the input is within the window.

LM339N is the industry-standard quad voltage comparator in DIP-14 with open-drain outputs and 2-36V supply range. All four comparators share common power rails. LM339AN offers lower 2mV offset.
